RYAN Morter and Yusmin Khan have GB squad ambitions after fighting their way to national Karate glory in the British Junior Clicker Tournament in Reading.
Yusmin enhanced her Team GB selection credentials after winning the Junior girls green belt and above category, overcoming a tricky Welsh competitor in the final.
The year 11 pupil at Millais School has already represented England several times, and will now be hoping to compete in the London Olympic Games in 2012.
Ryan, aged 13, won his title in the yellow belt group for the second consecutive year with a convincing display of clean and accurate techniques throughout the day.
The two fighters were representing Kyokushani Karate Club in Crawley, and Ryan’s father Paul was delighted with his son’s victory.
“We’re very proud of him. He’s worked very hard and done really, really well,” he enthused.
The event, held at the end of November, was a non-contact tournament in which points were awarded for performing and perfecting correct technique in 45 second-long fights.
Like Yusmin, Ryan has now also set his sights on representing Team GB in the future, though the form of Karate that he practises is not yet recognised as an Olympic sport.
“The trouble is there are so many different techniques that it would be difficult for every one to be included” Paul commented.
