Horsham go top after 100 per cent start

Horsham Squash Club’s third team briefly went top of Sussex Division 4 West after two solid wins last week.

Starting their season against Littlehampton II, Horsham were comfortable in registering a first win, before a last gasp victory against Bognor.

Chris Moon got off to a flyer in his fifth strong match, winning 9-2 and 9-0 in the first and third games, and although he was pegged back by losses in the second and fourth, was able to take the fifth 9-5.

Ahmet Ahmet was up against strong opposition and although forced tie breaks in two games, lost 3-1. Steve Bowers had more success, as he came back from 2-0 down to clinch his match 9-5 in the fifth set, while captain John Barnbrook dominated his match dominated to win his match 3-0. Finally, Maq Beg showed all his battling qualities on his return from injury but came up short in the last game as Littlehampton claimed their second point of the match.

A win against Bognor five days later would preserve their status as early league leaders. On paper it was a tough fixture, and debutant Martin Neil was given a baptism of fire in his first taste of team squash, losing the opening set 9-0.

But Neil found his feet, and took the next two sets before his higher ranked Bognor opponant found another gear and took the match 3-2 overall. Ahmet had recovered from his narrow loss earlier in the week to record a comfortable whitewash .Steve Bower was on the reciving end however, being outplayed as Bognor took the advantage again, but John Barnbook out thought his opponent to level the scores with a fine 3-1 win. That set it up for captain ian Chance to cruise to a 3-0 win, although West Worthing IV have now gone top by virtue of points won.
