HORSHAM’s ladies first XI ended a tricky season in a high with a 7-0 thumping of Worthing in the final of the Sussex Cup.
Jess Dean and Heidi Menniss scored two each as Horsham lifted the cup in style, and coach Warren Gilmour was delighted the team continued their strong end of season form. In a difficult year for the team, they escaped relegation from the National Leagues after entering a three-way play-off after finishing second bottom of the England Hockey League East Conference.
Horsham do not usually enter the Sussex Cup, preferring to concentrate on national competitions, so the decision to enter this year has been vindicated.
Gilmour said: “I wanted to play in it this year and bring younger players through. It didn’t actually work out that way as the league season was not going as planned, so we used it to get confidence up and ended up playing our strongest squad most of the time.”
