Horsham enjoy five point cushion

Horsham Hockey Club’s title charge is being led by an impressive teenage trio as the Kent Sussex Regional leaders open up a five point lead at the top.

Youngsters Jack Dean, John Kimberley and Toby Fraser - all sixth form students - were on target in Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Belvedere and Bexleyheath. And combined with a surprise defeat for Old Bordenians, the result means Horsham have a healthy cushion with one game until the Christmas break.

Captain Duncan Howarth said: “The fact they scored is really encouraging, they are going to get bigger stronger and faster, and hopefully continue to strengthen the team.”

Dean’s second goal was the pick of the afternoon, a clever flick deflected home a long range shot from outside the D.

John Burorughs set the ball running after two minutes, found by a Howarth pass on the edge of the D, he applied a clinical finish and Horsham did not look back.

In each of the last two seasons, Horsham have attempted to chase the league leaders down, and Howarth wants to continue setting the pace.

“We have been in the situation before, the top club keeps on winning and it puts the chasing teams under pressure. Now we are that team.”

Horsham face the unpredictable Marden Russets in the last match of 2012 on Saturday, and are eager to stay way ahead.

Howarth added: “If we come away with the five point cushion that will be massive. We traditionally do better in the second half of the season.”
