YOUNG gymnasts William Griggs and Ella Hannyngton are preparing for the biggest day of their careers so far.

The two Rudgwick Primary School pupils will compete at the National School Championships in the Sports Acro discipline in Stoke in May.

William (a member at Woking) and Ella (a member of Horsham Gymnastics Club) are used to competing in individual disciplines, so when they paired up in the District, County then regional competitions, it was a completely new experience. Ella, aged 8, currently trains for 12 hours a week. She said: “I just really like gymnastics.” While William, 9, added: “I am really happy, I really wanted to go to the national finals, and now I’m excited about it.”

Rudgwick Primary School has developed something of a tradition in gymnastics, with around 80 children attending a weekly gym club. Gymnastics coach Alison Thompson said: “It’s fantastic for the school. They both work very hard at their clubs and it is tremendous that they will represent the school a such a high standard.

“It will be a huge experience to take part in, and as they are in the 11 and under age group, will be up against children older than them.”
