Horsham defender Tom Gilbert has joined Ryman League outfit Dorking Wanderers on dual registration forms.

The central defender was one of only three players that stayed with the Hornets over the summer after last year’s relegation from the County League.

But after missing the start of the season through injury and finding his chances limited since his return due to Horsham’s in-form back line, Gilbert has gone in search of more regular football.

Horsham boss Dominic Di Paola admitted that the move would see Gilbert predominantly with the Division 1 South Surrey side, but hoped he would remain an option if they suffered injury problems.

Di Paola said: “Tom is a really good lad, but he has not been playing as much as he would like and just wants to play football.

“Ash (Jones) and Charlie (Farmer) have been playing really well and it was a case of Tom having to wait for an injury, or loss of form.

“It’s hard for defenders and you do not rotate them as much and it was hard to give him a chance to stake a claim. The agreement suits everyone and it will help him as well - he does not want to be not playing.

“He is still dual-signed so if anything happens and Dorking are happy to let him play, then he can play for us as well.”

Di Paola is expecting a tough clash tonight as his side travel to The Saffrons to take on Eastbourne Town in the third round of the Peter Bentley Cup.

Adam Hunt is back available for Horsham after a hip injury, although Scott Murfin still appears to be suffering from a foot problem.

The Horsham manager added: “We have them twice in the next few weeks and they are a good side. I expect them to be challenging for the title as they have got a lot of experience themselves.”
