Emma is Horsham Judo’s golden girl

EMMA Farnes completed a great month of competition with a gold medal at the Southern Area Inter-County Team Championships.

Horsham Judo Club member Emma, who had won gold at the Sussex Closed Trials two weeks previously, won two of her three fights at Worthing Leisure Centre, against the cream of judo talent from Sussex, Kent, Surrey and Hampshire.

Emma won of fights by Ippon (maximum 10 points) one of her wins lasted just four seconds as she beat a first Dan Black belt on her way to helping Sussex Ladies to win gold and the Team Championship trophy.

Sussex Men also won Gold, boys took Silver & the Girls took 3rd place.

Abigail Mellor and Ben Taylor who both won medals at the Sussex Trials were called up as reserves on the day but were not required to fight. At the trials, Abigail won two of her three fights and came home with a creditable second place, and Ben collected a bronze medal, winning one of his three bouts against boys in a higher weight division. Alex Mellor also competed, but suffered a first round exit.

Emma’s gold in the under 57kg category was the highlight as she took her first contest in great style throwing her opponent within 12 seconds to score ippon, and against a seasoned national player, she stayed the distance for two minutes before being thrown for ippon.
