The 23-year-old, from Cowfold, is a reigning European and British champion and five-time British record holder.

In his most-recent competition in August, he managed to break the British squat record in his category with a 199kg squat, the deadlift record twice with 246kg, followed by a second 250kg lift.

Barney, who has self-trained in the sport and is studying for a Masters in sports rehab, said: “’I’ve never experienced anything like the moments I made the lift for each of those records. It was utter elation and pride.

“It was the embodiment of hundreds of hours, thousands of days spent being disciplined. I can’t pretend it wasn’t overwhelming and I did have a few emotional moments.

“I never dreamt of being at this stage with such little time in the sport, and now I am now under two months from the World Championships in Italy this November.

“I have nothing to lose but a last big chance to show what I have worked for and make myself and those who support me proud.”

Barney has been competing in the sport for two years and his success has come as a result of plenty of hard work.

The lifter trains in between working seven days a week as a gym instructor and coach.

He also helps with rehab and strength and conditioning for Horsham Rugby Club, and injury treatment for the Saracens ladies team

He added: “Simply to say, alongside being self trained and coached achieving the level I have, it is also important to know that this was no easier for me than anyone else.”

“It is possible to make time if it is something you are truly passionate about.”
