Ethiopian distance runner Yared Hagos comfortably won the Barns Green Half Marathon today.
An estimated 1,800 runners have completed the 13.1mile test this morning - and Hagos was the clear winner.
The 31-year-old was just two minutes outside of the course record time set in 2010 by Kenyan Edwin Kipyego as he clocked a provision time of 1hour 6minutes 54secs - it appeared he was on course for the record, going through the halfway point in under 30 minutes.
But the effects of a cold took hold in the second half. Hagos said: “I have had a cold and cough and it was very hard. The first half was very fast, but after that my body was empty.”
James Baker, of Chichester was five minutes behind, with Horsham Joggers’ Andrew Robinson third. Worthing’s Sarah Kingston was the first female finisher, in a provisional time of 1hour 25m 4s.
