Slinfold Golf Club’s Karen Ashcroft and Cathy Downey have continued their amazing run in the Daily Mail Foursomes competition.
The pair beat Tylney Park duo Debbie and Jennie Prince 4&3 to progress to the last qualifying round for the second successive year.
After a slow start, the Slinfold pair enjoyed five successive wins at holes five to nine as they romped to a four hole lead by the halfway mark. There was further drama on the 11th and 12th holes as Debbie and Jenny Prince won both to get within two, but their hopes were dashed as Slinfold took the next two holes, and a safe half on the 15th clinched victory.
Karen and Cath are into the seventh and last of the qualifying rounds of this national competition, with just 32 clubs remaining from an original entry of over 1,500.
Monday’s draw saw them miss out on a home tie, but they only have to travel as far as Sevenoaks to play Wildernesse Golf Club. A win will put them into the finals for a second year running, this year to be held at Marriott Dalmahoy in the Midlands.
Elsewhere at the club, Slinfold captain Peter Beck hosted the annual Captain’s Day Mixed Texas Scramble, and a shotgun start saw 30 teams of four fill the course in a day of extraordinary scoring. There was no holding back the foursome of Neal Marriott, Lewis Kelly, Mark Tuppen and Matt Fynn who scorched to a a gross 59 (nett 49.1) including 13 birdies and just five pars. Fred Ransley, Chris Green, Peter Jackson and Martin Newark were second.
And Slinfold are through to the final of the Sussex County Exclusive Trophy following a 3-1 win over Cowdray Park. Winners for Slinfold were Jeff King and Neil Turner (4 up), John Jordan and Brian Johnstone (3up) and Brian Cairns and Wayne Short(2up). The final is at Mannings Heath on September 1 against Hassocks.
