Alanna so close to World Championship gold

EUROPEAN Champions Alanna Baker and Poppy Spalding came agonisingly close to also being crowned world champions at the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championship.

Alanna, 19 from Storrington and her partner Poppy joined 16 other members of the GB senior acrobatic squad which travelled to the ESPN World of Sport in Disney World, Florida to take part in the 23rd World Championships, held between April 16 and 18.

Along with the World Age Group competitions that followed, the competition saw nearly 600 athletes from 35 countries competing in the week’s events.

Following two days of qualifications Alanna and Poppy reached the finals, where they claimed the bronze medal in the Senior Woman’s Pair category, finishing just behind Ukraine who took gold and Belarus who claimed silver.

Russia finished just outside the medals in fourth place, USA were fifth and Poland sixth in the finals.
