Horsham fans’ favourite Tony Nwachukwu is itching for a return to action - and remains confident of winning-back his place in the side.
Flying winger Nwachukwu, a product of the Hornets’ youth system, has been missing with a knee injury since September, and since discovering he does not need surgery on a medial ligament problem has been working towards a return by the end of this month.
And with the Hornets on a good run of late - a 4-1 thumping of Three Bridges on Saturday proof of their progress - Nwachukwu is desperate to play.
He said: “I was worried I would have to miss the rest of the season, but because I stopped playing straight away and got some good advice from (physio) Andi Marfleet it made it a lot easier.
“Now it’s just a case of getting fit in the gym and ensuring I am ready.”
Nwachukwu, who has scored 24 goals in 117 appearances for the Hornets, admitted he feared manager Simon Colbran would be forced into signing a like-for-like replacement if he was to miss the remainder of the season, but has remained in constant contact with the boss who has assured the 21-year-old he is part of his plans.
New faces such as prolific County League striker Scott Tipper and the returning Ryan Woodford have ‘completed the jigsaw’ for Colbran and in a tight Ryman Division 1 South table - six points seperate fifth from 15th - Nwachukwu believes the additions can see Horsham become upwardly mobile.
“It was always going to be tricky in this division,” Nwachukwu said.
“I know how hungry people are. The win against Three Bridges shows what we are capable of and the confidence will be oozing out now.
“I think this could be one of the best seasons I have had here, when you look at the players the manager has brought in, especially Woody, we can push for at least the play-offs.”
