Steyning boss Richard Whittington believes the attitude of his “aptain courageous illustrates the new-found resilience in his side.
Town extended their unbeaten run to four games with an impressive 1-1 away draw against league leaders Newhaven on Saturday.
Reds captain Alex Gathern played most of the game with a broken nose and Whittington says that symbolises the fighting spirit among his players.
He said: “Alex broke his nose early in the first half and found it hard to breath for the rest of the game but he carried on and was probably our man of the match. That shows the attitude we have in the side now. In the past we probably would have gone to the league leaders and rolled over but not now. We’re up for every game and we go for it no matter who it is against.”
The two sides cancelled each other out up until the hour mark when Town took the lead through a piece of quick thinking by Craig Knowles.
The wideman had his back to goal as the ball dropped to him from a corner and he managed to backheel into the net through a crowded six-yard box to score his fifth goal in three games.
The visitors’ advantage lasted just five minutes as the hosts hit back through speedy winger Lee Robinson. The brother of former Brighton and Hove Albion striker Jake outpaced the Town defence to a long punt downfield, rounded keeper Matt Evans and netted from a tight angle.
The Barrowmen almost hit back when substitute Michael Page produced a fine save out of Newhaven keeper Jake Buss and they went close again soon after when Phil Williamson failed to get direction on a header after he had beaten Buss to a ball over the top.
Whittington added: “You can never complain about getting an away point against the team who are top and flying but we are slightly disappointed it wasn’t three. We had chances to snatch it and that shows how well we are playing at the moment.”
