They eased to a 120-run victory over Sutton thanks to a staring role from Horsham’s opening pair.

Batting first, Ludlow and captain James Johnson (97) put on a first-wicket stand of 207 in their 296-1 total in 45 overs.

Michael Munday then took 3-20 as Sutton stuttered to 176 all out in their 42nd over.

Ludlow’s score was the highest of the day in the entire first round of the national competition and he took the plaudits from his skipper.

Johnson said: “Joe was outstanding and he really showed a hunger to score runs, which I think is something we have not really had in the top for the past couple of years. Potentially he looks like a real gem for us and if he plays like that for the rest of the season, he will raise a few eyebrows.

“I was slightly worried with the team we had out as we were struggling for numbers, but the game played out perfectly for us.

“They put us into bat and we hit 296, which stalemated them, regardless of our bowling attack. We haven’t really done well in the competition in the past, so it was nice to get a result and go through to face Roffey in the next round.”
