Billingshurst relief at Intermediate Cup progress

Mark Betts admitted his Billingshurst side were just glad to have got the job done in a tricky Sussex Intermediate cup tie on Saturday.

Hurst needed an extra time goal from Ash Lewis to secure their progress to the fifth round on a tricky surface against Brighton, Hove & District League outfit Montpelier Villa.

And manager Betts said: “You got there and it was a case of making sure you got in and got out again with the right result to get you to the next round. At 2-0 up we took our foot off the gas.”

Billingshurst roared into a 2-0 lead through an own goal after Darren Annis pressured a defender from Nathan Stepney’s cross; and then an Annis close range finish from Lewis’ left wing cross.

But, Villa were handed a lifeline when Oli Lambkin’s loose pass in midfield was seized upon and the hosts pulled one back shortly before the hour.

And with 15 minutes to play Montpelier were level thanks to a free header which took the tie to extra time.

Billingshurst were not to be denied however, and a neat exchange of passes between Remi Thomas and Lewis saw the former net the winner.

Billingshurst: Betts, Geary, Proto, Lambkin, R Carse (Slade 60), Stepney, Fiest, Simmons, Lewis, Annis, Thomas .
