Late postponement not Pagham’s fault
HORSHAM boss Hugo Langton has defended Pagham after last night’s Brighton Charity Cup tie was called off only an hour before the scheduled kick off.
The team and a number of Hornets supporters made the freezing Tuesday night drive all the way to Nyetimber Lane before the referee decided the pitch was unsafe to play on.
It left players and fans equally frustrated by a second postponement in four days following Saturday’s home game with Aveley being snowed off.
But Langton said: “Yes it was frustrating because we travelled all the way down there and a lot of my london-based players had to get off work early to be there.
“We were all a bit miffed, but to be fair the referee was 100 per cent correct because there was an extremely dangerous part of the pitch near the changing rooms.
“My players were still bang up for playing, but to be fair to Pagham it wasn’t their fault, the pitch was fine all day but then by 6.15pm one particular area had frozen. They were very apologetic but it wasn’t their fault and it was the right decision.”
As on Saturday, Langton still held a training session with his players on the pitch as he insists on fitness levels staying high and limiting the disruption the freezing weather has brought.
The match will now be played next Tuesday, which is Valentine’s Day, at the same 7.45pm kick off time. This Saturday Horsham are due to go to Wealdstone for a Ryman League fixture but that will also be weather dependant with the cold snap set to continue into the weekend.
