Kirsty skates to international honours

YOUNG Kirsty Richardson has skate expectations after an ice cool performance at the Stockholm Trophy in Sweden.

Her third place in the event at the weekend qualifies the 14-year-old for a place among the ranks of junior ice skating talent.

From next January, she will appear at the British Junior Championships.

She impressed judges and amassed enough points from her short and long programmes to grab third, and to comfortably qualify for the juniors.

Mum Yasmin commented: "I'm very proud of her, she does get quite embarrassed and doesn't like a fuss really. She was really pleased she didn't slip up and got the points she wanted.

"She skated really well, at the British Championships she didn't have such a good event and just said 'next time'. On Sunday she skated amazingly she didn't fall and didn't mess anything up."

Kirsty, from Broadbridge Heath, saw off opposition from around Europe to clinch third spot, thanks to her scores of 31-37 points in the short programme and 54-77 in the long.

All these points helped towards Interntaional Judging System rankings which will help her qualify for the Junior level.

When competing abroad, a high premium is placed on the execution of required elements, such as set spins and jumps, in the short routine.

"In this country you can get away with it, it's harder to get the higher marks in another country," Yasmin remarked.

The Tanbridge House School pupil has now qualified for the British Junior Championships next January, a competition she has competed in at Novice level where she recorded second and third place finishes.

She took up skating seven years ago when she attended a public skating session at the Spectrum rink in Guildford - and improved through courses and personal tuition.

Yasmin added: "She takes it all in her stride, some people get upset when they fall on the ice. Kirsty does not fall too much and when she does is back up really quickly and carries on, she knows she can do better."
