Horsham striker set to return for tonight’s Pagham clash
THE RETURN of Dan Morris to Horsham FC this week has given everyone a lift, manager Hugo Langton has said.
The striker will make his second debut for the club at Pagham tonight in the Brighton Charity Cup, although Langton hasn’t decided if he will start or begin on the bench.
The 27 year old netted in both of Horsham’s opening two games of the season and scored again against Carshalton before falling out with former Hornets manager Justin Luchford and leaving for Metropolitan Police.
He joined Walton & Hersham before resigning for Horsham last Friday, and with goals in short supply at the Ryman Premier’s bottom club, Langton is delighted to have him back.
“Dan is in line for his second debut at Pagham tonight,” Langton said. “He’s a very popular lad in my dressing room and I’ve always enjoyed working with him. When I told the lads he was coming back you could see it gave them a little lift and he’s done two training sessions with us and been fantastic.
“I’m delighted to have him back and I want to keep him here long term, and what he said to me on the phone was ‘are you going to be managing next year because I don’t want to be here 14 games, I want to play 100 games’ which is a fantastic attitude.”
Langton is yet to decide who will make tonight’s starting XI but being rested are Tony Nwachukwu, Ray Freeman and Ian Varley while Jake Jacobs has family commitments. All should be fit for Saturday’s trip to Wealdstone.
The squad will feature a number of youngsters including Dean O’Keefe, Jack Surlis, Adam Hutchings and Mthokozisi Moyo.
Having slipped up against County League opponents Littlehampton earlier in the season, and needed penalties to see off Southwick in the previous round, Langton has warned his players not to get complacent.
He said: “This is going to be a very hard game, Pagham are a very good side and there’s a chance we could be playing each other next season (if Horsham go down and Pagham gain promotion).
“For me it will come down to who works the hardest and who wants it more. The hardest working team will progress.
“I’m really looking forward to it, a lot of people might say it’s a minor cup but it’s a chance to play again after ten days without a game and we want to do as well as we can.”
Having raced into an early lead at the top of Division One, Pagham have slipped back into third, but with top scorer Scott Murfin on fine form with 29 goals they remain one of the favourites for promotion.
