Horsham YMCA returned to Division 1 action for the first time in a month with a 4-1 home defeat to East Grinstead on Saturday, a performance concluded with the sending off of forward Elliott Romain three minutes from time.
YM’s lack of fixtures over the festive period was evident as they produced a rusty, lacklustre performance, and although they perhaps created the more clear-cut chances, were punished by a much sharper and more clinical Wasps outfit.
A Sam Schaaf hat-trick put the visitors 3-0 up and although Romain replied, George Hiller-Jones wrapped things up with a fourth late on before Romain saw red.
YM Boss Peter Buckland said: “I don’t think it was that bad a performance, other than two stupid mistakes, and so 4-1 looks like an emphatic victory.
“We started slow and looked rusty, which we were, because we hadn’t had a game for a long time.
“I was desperately disappointed that the Worthing game was called off on New Year’s Day because that would have given us an extra game of football under our belts.
“All we’ve had for weeks is five-a-side indoor training and that’s just not the same thing.”
