Peter Buckland has warned his Horsham YM side not to get carried away after their opening day 6-1 demolition of Crowborough Athletic on Saturday.
A brace for both strikers Dean Wright and Lee Smith on his competitive debut, sandwiched between an own goal and a late Dean Cox wonderstrike, saw YM go one better against the team they beat on the final day of last season to stay in Division One.
Manager Buckland said: “It was a comfortable win, I couldn’t really ask for more. But I told the lads afterwards not to get too carried away, I don’t want the lads to get too bullish although 6-1 is a very good result.
Crowborough aren’t a bad side at all, they’ve got some good young players but there will be tougher tests. It’s a marathon not a sprint and we’ll get a reality check soon.”
“Crowborough seem to be putting the emphasis on youth and I told my players not to let them play football, you have to get off to a good start and play at a high tempo and that’s what we did, we were 4-0 up after 30 minutes, Buckland said, adding: “It went well all round, even the subs did well and my strikers deserved two goals each.”
Buckland expects a much sterner test when he takes his YM side to East Grinstead Town on Tuesday night.
