Full-back Joe Holvey scored a stunning eight-minute hat-trick to rescue Loxwood a point against AFC Uckfield Town on Saturday.

The Magpies were trailing 3-0 with 78 minutes gone, before Holvey popped up with an unlikely treble.

They could have even pinched all three points late on as home stopper Daniel Andrews made a point-blank save with his face after a ball across the box came off a defender’s foot.

Loxwood manager Mark Beard said that a triple midfield substitution on 60 minutes inspired his side as Byron Napper, Ollie Moore and Sam Beard all came on.

He said: “We started quite well and Charlie Pitcher went close in the first two minutes and then Joel Colbran, on his debut, hit the bar from a corner.

“I thought we were doing ok as I played a few young ones and rested a couple who have been playing a lot of games of late.

“We just never really go going for one reason or another and made them look a really good team. I could have made changes at half-time, but gave them a chance to right their wrongs and we ended up 3-0 down.

“I made three changes on 60 minutes and I said to attack them and they were a different class when they came on. We could have even won it, but that would have been gutting for them as they were the better side for 70 minutes.”

Scott Taylor netted twice in two minutes to put AFC 2-0 ahead on 24 minutes and Stephen Dallaway added a third five minutes into the second half.

With a resurgent Loxwood taking control late on, Holvey headed home his first on 79 minutes and then added a further two smart finishes to level the scores.

Beard added: “He does not score many, although did get one against St Francis the other week. We encourage our full-backs to get on and for me he has been probably one of our best players this season.

“He started the season wondering if he was going to stay with a new manager and where he fitted in, but he’s one of the first names on the team-sheet now.”

Loxwood: Smith, Holvey, French, Colbran, Courtney, Bachelor, Swaine (Napper 60), Simpson (Moore 60), Cave, Barnard (S.Beard 60), Pitcher.
