Horsham YMCA sent out an message to the rest of the Sussex County League with today’s 6-1 thrashing of Worthing United.
Towards the end of last season, United had come to Gorings Mead and collected a comfortable three points with a 3-1 win, But they were on the receiving end of a Bank Holiday hiding as Lee Smith bagged a hat trick.
It was Peter Buckland’s side’s second handsome home win this season, following their 6-0 demolition of Crowborough Athletic on the opening day.
Buckland said: “When we are at full strength I fancy us against anyone. I am really excited again, we still need two experienced players of being a really good team, and I expect to sign them in the next two to three weeks.
Buckland wanted an early goal to help his side settle, and Martin Smith’s opening goal delivered, his strike in the 14th minte applied the finishing touches to a long spell of possession and a string of 11 passes to cut Worthing open.
Lee Smith scored his first six minutes later and then Dean Cox netted a thumping header to finish off a sweeping move.
The game was dead at buried at half time, and Buckland chastised his men for overplaying it in the second half - even though Smith scored twice, either side of Tom Donnelly’s consolation.Dan Sullivan then added the icing on the cake with the final goal six minutes from time.
