West Sussex Football league Round-up

Premier Division: Both West Chiltington and Faygate preserved their unbeaten start to the season with an exciting 3-3 draw.

Faygate raced into a two-goal lead, and Chilt looked out of the game, until a second half fightback was instigated by Gary Weedon, who converted well when put through on goal.

The visitors then levelled when Jack Sunderland tapped in from close range, before full-back Josh Daly thought he had won it with a stunning strike from 25 yards which went in off the post.

But with seconds remaining, a poor clearance allowed Faygate a speculative shot at goal which looped in for the equaliser.

Tony Kopp Cup

Goalkeeper Rin Tomsett was West Chiltington Reserves’ penalty hero with two saves in a 4-3 shootout victory after a pulsating cup tie against Horsham Trinity.

Chilt found themselves 2-0 early on against a fired-up Trinity, but that changed with two goals in as many minutes after the break as John Tolson’s brace levelled the scores. Trinity re-took the lead with fine solo goal, only for Craig Dawson to power home a Josh Daly corner to take the match into extra time.

A Dan Leppard strike put Chilt in front early in the first period of added time, and it was left up to a tiring defence to stave off wave after wave of Trinity attacks. But they could not hold out, and with virtually the final kick of the game, Trinity bundled the ball over the line for force a shootout.

Leppard, youngster Connor Weedon, Daly and Sam Mellor were successful from the spot, as Tomsett saved the third and fourth Trinity penalties to earn a spot in the Second Round.

Premier Division

Cowfold were held at home for a second week as a handy Upper Beeding side came away with a point after a 1-1 draw.

Chances were at a premium in a tight first half, but Kristian Harding broke the shackles when his cross field pass released James Wrigley, who hit an angled drive across the Beeding keeper to put Fold ahead.

Lloyd Hatton then headed wide from six yards when unmarked, and Cowfold would regret that miss, as Beeding started to force the pace after changing formation. The visitors hit the woodwork and forced a fine save from Matt Beck, before a contentious handball decision in the Fold box gave them a chance to pull level.

Debutant Joss Knowles obliged from the spot to earn a point for Beeding.

Division 1

Barns Green recovered from losing an early goal to beat Clymping Reserves 3-1.

A defensive lapse saw Green fall behind, but there was a positive response, and only wayward finishing and some fine saves kept them a bay. Eventually, Pete Walker make the breakthrough from the edge of the box, and Green went on to control the second half with further goals from Stevie Blick and Henry Liley.

Centenary Cup First Round

Alfold needed penalties to see off Hammer United in the First Round on Saturday.

Hammer took the lead after a defensive mix up, although that was soon cancelled out when Robbie Brininger tapped in from a couple of yards. Brininger was then vital in Alfold’s second, hit run opening up space for Andy Sullivan to curl a stunning strike into the top corner. Hammer managed a leveller before the break and then went in front from the spot after a foul by James Bisset. Zach Gray lashed home a looping volley to brings the scores level again, but with just three minutes to play, Hammer regained the lead.

Alfold responded again though, and with a cup exit looming, Brininger dispatched a 90th minute penalty after a handball on the line earned a Hammer defender a red card.

Hammer again went in front deep into extra time when a header from a tight angle crept it, and just when it looked the match was over - Sean Lee headed home Russ Thorne’s cross to make it 5-5 and force spot kicks.

Brininger, Bisset, Thorne and Lee were successful from the spot as Liam Lindsay saved two penalties to send Alfold through.
