Work is well under way on Steyning Town’s new 3G surface - and the club have a bumper opening weekend planned next month.

The FA Cup’s attendance along with Mervyn Leggitt - the chairman of the FA’s National Game Board - will be the pinnacle of the event in the official opening ceremony on Sunday, October 16.

The day before, the club hope to have youth Horsham League games on the Saturday morning to begin the launch of the new £435,000 artificial surface. There will also be a county seniors game in the afternoon and a Steyning veterans versus Storrington in the evening.

On the Sunday, an under-18 Southern Combination League will kick-off the morning with the official opening taking place at 1.30pm along Leggitt and Sussex FA officials, followed by at Chelsea Academy match.

Committee member Dave Shepard said: “The opening of Steyning Town Community Football Club’s new 3G pitch is an amazing achievement for the club, the community of Steyning and football in Sussex.

“As a lifelong football supporter and active participant in grass-roots football the presence of the FA Cup is a dream come true - to be up close to a trophy that has passed through the hands of so many extraordinary players and clubs. It’s an opportunity for everyone to see a trophy that is so often only seen on television.”

Club secretary Daniel Fuller-Smith said: “The project itself is a brand new 3G pitch and surround costing around £435,000 that is based on the same specification as the pitch Velocity put into Sussex FA headquarters at Culver Road this time last year.

“Our plan is to get the pitch in this season and then work on the other areas of the club next closed season, but we have so far refurbished the clubhouse.

“We are all about community at Steyning so our main use of the pitch will be our own teams and also Ashington, who we are now working closely with.”
