Steyning Town FC manager Richard Whittington predicted a bright future for the club after he watched his young side dumped out of the Sussex RUR Cup at Little Common.
Adam Burton scored his eighth goal of the season, but a Steyning side featuring eight teenagers found the hosts - flying high in Division 2 of the Sussex County League - too strong.
Whittington said: “I decided to blood some of the youngsters as it was a cup game and they all did fantastically well. For 80 minutes we matched the league leaders.
“The quality of the youngsters coming through shows that the long-term future of the club is very bright. My philosophy will always be that if you’re good enough then you are old enough.”
Jamie Crone gave Common a 1-0 half time lead, before Lewis Hole made it 2-0. Burton’s neat finish pulled one back before Anthony Cooper, Crone and Hole added a gloss to the score.
