Late winner hands Steyning derby honours over Storrington

Richard Whittington praised the character and spirit of his Steyning squad after their dramatic last-gasp victory over fierce rivals Storrington last night (Tuesday).

Craig Knowles was at it again, remarkably scoring in the final minute for the third straight game to give Steying a 1-0 win which saw them leapfrogg Swans and gain three places in Division 2.

Following 89 closely-fought minutes where both defences were on top, Knowles won it when he cut in from the right and curled a sweet effort into the far corner to send the hosts into delirium.

“It looked like only something special would stop it from finishing 0-0 and that’s exactly what happened,” a delighted Town boss Whittington said. “There were good celebrations aferwards as you can imagine being it was a local derby.

“That’s Craig’s third goal in a row in the last minute, he scored Little Common and then against Saltdean on Saturday so he scores some very important goals for us.

“We had the lion’s share of possession but neither side posed much of a threat, but we defended really well and kept a clean sheet and that’s what made the late winner possible.

And he added: “We’ve got great character and spirit and we are a fit side as well. We can go longer than the 90 minutes and still play at a good level.”

It was Steyning’s third straight league victory to move them up to 12th, while Swans drop down to 16th.
