HORSHAM Sparrows Under-12 girls won the Sussex County Cup final at the weekend 3-1 against Mile Oak FC, giving the team a league and cup double.

Having already claimed the County ‘A’ League, the girls completed their amazing season which has seen them win every single game they have played.

The final itself was a close affair watched by a crowd of more than 100 at the Holbrook club.

After dominating the first 20 minutes and creating numerous chances a combination of poor finishing, and some great saves from the Mile Oak keeper, meant the game was all square until two minutes before half-time when Felicity Love finished of a great move to give Sparrows the lead into the break.

Sparrows then scored a quick second goal after the break through Bronwen Thomas, before Felicity Love added a third with a header at the back post following another excellent run and cross from Bronwen.

With Alexandra Malzer controlling the centre of the midfield and Zoe Moore making a couple of great interventions in goal it appeared the game was beyond doubt.

Mile Oak kept battling and scored with ten minutes remaining to set up an exciting and tense end to the game.

However, the girls stayed calm to the final whistle and could even have added a further one or two goals after some lovely passing football.

Manager Gary Budinger was tremendously proud of everything the girls had achieved this season, as they had not only played attractive football in the correct spirit, but have now set a record than can never be bettered.

Most pleasing was that this had been a real team effort with all girls involved in every game.

He was also delighted that five of the squad had now been invited to attend the Sussex County schools trials in May.

At the end of the game a presentation was made by the North West Sussex Seagulls Supporters (NWSSS) who are to sponsor the team for the 2012/13 season

The double winning Sparrows squad is: Zoe Moore, Jazmine Younger, Grace Perkins, Fiona McMartin, Kathrynne Otley, Bronwen Thomas (Captain) Alexandra Malzer, Felicity Love, Megan Collis, Daisy Fitton, Amy Henson, Emily Budinger
