HORSHAM YMCA boss Sammy Donnelly says his side are headed in the right direction after Saturday’s battling loss to Rye in the Sussex County League.

Rye, the leading goalscorers in the entire County League, won thanks to a 54th minute Liam Upton strike, and despite the defeat Donnelly believes there is plenty to cheer about.

“We could have had something from the game,” he said. “In defeat I was proud of my players, it looks like we are going in the right direction, way even though the result was not right.

“As far as I am concerned, we defended manfully when we had to. It was an awful day and I think Rye were glad of the three points. We had an opportunity to get a point, I was pleased with the way we played as a unit, we were tight, well organised and supported each other, there were a lot of pluses.”
