Dominic Di Paola believes getting Steve Metcalf on board will be a great addition to his Horsham squad.

Metcalf, who won promotion from the Ryman League South with Worthing last season, joined Hornets last week after being released by the Woodside Road outfit.

The experienced 32-year-old defender was Worthing skipper in that promotion-winning team and was also part of the Peacehaven & Telscombe team that previously won Ryman South Division.

Di Paola believes getting someone of Metcalf’s quality on board was a no-brainer and said: “He’s a great lad who just wants to play football. Once I learnt of his availability, I got in touch and after a day Steve decided to join us.

“We were quite lucky in the fact he knows a few players at the club and is aware of what Horsham are about. Steve is a really great guy and I have no doubt he’s going to improve the quality of our squad.”

With Metcalf and Scott Kirkwood his previous two additions, Di Paola feels his squad is getting better as the season progresses.

He added: “If you look at the previous two signings I’ve made they are great additions.

“I’ve been saying that I only want players to improve the team and I think both Steve and Scott will do that over the course of the season.”

Metcalf made a brief debut appearance coming on late in the day to replace Charlie Farmer in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Trophy preliminary-round victory at Potters Bar Town.

He then made his first start in their 3-0 league victory against East Grinstead on Tuesday night.

Horsham now have two Ryman League home clashes in three days as they welcome Whyteleafe to Goings Mead on Saturday and Greenwich Borough on Tuesday night.
