Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland has admitted he has a real love for the FA Vase as he dares to dream on the long road to Wembley.
YM hosts Combined Counties League side Bedfont Sports on Sunday this weekend in the first round.
The YM boss believes with the whole tournament being contested by Step 5 teams, it offers a great chance to progress, earn the club a cash injection as well as the distant hope of playing on the hallowed turf on the national stadium.
He said: “I like the FA Vase as when it is all said and done, you are only playing against Step 5 teams.
“Ultimately, and dare I dream, but there is a chance to play at Wembley. We beat teams last year from the Ryman League and even a Conference side, but the Vase you have more of a chance of winning than the Sussex Senior Cup as it’s against teams at your own level.
“It’s a good stage to come into the competition and I have had Bedfont watched and they are a good side. The Combined Counties League is a bit more physical than in Sussex, so we will have to be on our game.”
YM will be without Nick Sullivan, Adam O’Carroll, Brad Curtis and Alex Gathern.
Buckland added: “It’s still a strong 11, but the bench may not be as strong as I would like.”
