Broadbridge Heath FC came close to a upset when they took Hassocks to extra time in the John O’Hara Cup on Saturday.
Steve Painter’s newly promoted Sussex County League Division 2 side hit the woodwork twice before their 3-2 defeat to Division 1 outfit Hassocks.
A well-taken header from Hassocks’ Anthony Hibbert which he glanced past James Fisher, separated the teams at the break. Steve Painter’s side responded well though, and Michael Wood went close twice - hitting the post with one effort - before Jake Holmes smashed home when Jamal Sultan’s cross was only partially cleared to take his tally to five goals in five games since signing from Forest.
Sultan’s cross then hit the bar, but it was the Robins who scored next, through Nathan Mills’ classy turn and shot. Heath replied again though, and forced extra time when defender Dan Attwater was pushed forward and caused enough of a distraction for Dean Robinson to net with two minutes remaining.
A shock win was not to be though, as Hassocks sealed a third round tie with Redhill or Little Common when Jamie Weston scored in the first half of extra time.
