Billingshurst manager Mark Betts beloieves are among the contenders for the Sussex County League Division 3 title.

A 3-1 defeat of Rottingdean Village on Saturday sees County League new-boys Hurst sit three points off top spo, with games in hand. And Betts is confident the top six are already starting to pull away.

“This is going to be a very tough division,” Betts said. “With Sidlesham, ourselves, Barnham and Haywards Heath, there seem to be some teams who are already moving away.

Second half goals from Darren Annis, Nick Tilley and Jamie Groves, sealed the points as Mark Betts’ recovered after Rottingdean’s Jamie Watts fired the visitors ahead on the half hour.

“We went through the motions a bit (in the first half)” Betts said. “We had to bring some more tempo into it. We have to earn the win and not expect it.”

Hurst were also indebted to a fine Tom Betts save when 2-1 up, while Paul Elliott saw a firsy half penalty hit the post.
