Billingshurst manager Mark Betts was delighted with his side’s 5-2 thrashing of Uckfield on their County League debut
Goals from Nick Tilley, Paul Elliott, Darren Annis and a Luke Hickling brace sealed the win in the club’s first ever game in the County League after they won promotion to Division 3.
“I’m very pleased. It was a dream start, away from home, against a strong side and it was a great effort by all of the players” Betts said.
Appropriately, it was Tilley who got the ball rolling in the Hurst’s maiden voyage in the County League with the midfielder having come through the ranks at the club.
The second came as Elliott tucked away a penalty and a Hickling effort put his side comfortably 3-0 up at half time.
Uckfield hit back though through a 35 yard wonder strike by right back Jamie McPhail before Annis responded for Billingshurt.
A minute later and it was 4-2 as Uckfield’s Andrew McIntosh found the net only for Hickling to make the scoreline more emphatic mid-way through the second half.
Despite the convincing win, Betts insisted his side’s feet are firmly on the ground: “We’re not just here to make up the numbers and we’re just going to take one game at a time. The aim is to have another successful year.”
