Roffey end Sidlesham run with cup win

Roffey ended Sidlesham’s unbeaten start to the season with a thrilling extra time win to reach the third round of the Sussex Intermediate Cup.

Up against the side which dealt-out a 4-2 defeat at Bartholemew Way earlier in the season, Roffey proved to be the fitter of the two sides, and boss Dan Redman said confidence is growing among his men.

He said: “We were definitely the fitter side when we went into extra time. We had a slow start in the first half and we were not really at the races.

“We seem to be a second half team, but every week we are growing in confidence, we have a good bunch of lads who are playing for each other.”

Sam Matthews prodded home from close range to cancel out Paul Barnes’ first half opener, and there was nothing to separate the teams before full time. Matthews then struck again early in extra time, with a delicious curled finish, before Barnes struck back.

But Roffey’s superior fitness started to tell as they got on top, and Lampard slotted home a 102nd minute penalty to restore the hosts’ lead.

And substitute Harry Roadley then made sure of Roffey’s progress with a neat finish when he polished off a slick passing move.
