YM boss Peter Buckland is confident he can fend off any interest in his players and keep his squad together for the rest of the Sussex County League season.

Striker Elliott Romain, on loan from Three Bridges, was the subject of a seven day approach from Ryman League clubs Burgess Hill and Leatherhead.

Fellow striker Martin Smith is understood to have also interested a number of clubs but Buckland said: “Elliott reliably informs me he’s going nowhere this season and neither is Martin Smith. “I don’t need players on contracts to keep them, I keep the players because of the way I treat them, the way I respect them and the way they respect me.

“Again I might have egg on my face, if someone flashes a big enough cheque but at this moment in time I’m convinced we’ll keep the squad together and more.”

YM currently sit seventh in Division 1 having won their last six league games in a ten-game unbeaten run.

Buckland kept the club up on the final day of last season having taken over as manager for the last few games.

After a mixed start the boss believes his side are showing their true colours and is confident they can capitalise when teams drop off when the season hots when

“Historically after Christmas (with) the so called bigger teams, budgets start to run out, you start to see strange results,” he said.

“You won’t with us, we’ll have the same consistency because we’ll have the same squad of players together barring injury.”
