Horsham 2-1 Folkestone Invicta

Horsham returned to form with a much-improved performance to see off Folkestone Invicta at Gorings Mead.

A Gary Charman header and a typically thunderous free kick from Billy Medlock put the hosts 2-0 up, and although Folkestone replied with a Josh Burchell penalty the Hornets showed good nerve to comfortably see out the final 30 minutes.

Horsham’s day was soured slightly by a late red card for Ryan Marriott for comments he made to the linesman, but manager Simon Colbran was delighted with the performance and result after three straight defeats.

Folkestone thought they had taken the lead inside two minutes but referee Peter Georgiou decided Nat Blanks’ header hadn’t crossed the line after coming down off the underside of the bar.

On 13 minutes new Horsham captain Charman rose to head in a corner and Billy Joe King struck the crossbar as Horsham deserved their 1-0 half-time lead.

That lead was doubled when Medlock hammered in another wonderful free kick from 25 yards, although the cushion lasted only a matter of minutes as King was adjudged to have handled in the box and Burchell sent Hunter the wrong way from the spot.

But rather than panic Horsham’s defence - lead by the excellent Charman - looked composed and dealt with any Folkestone threat as the pressure increased.

And not even a straight red for Marriott - who was bursting with energy from the middle of the park all game - could not dampen spirits as Horsham claimed a three points which they hope will be the start of their climb away from the foot of the table.

Horsham (4-4-2): Hunter; Brockhurst, Farmer, Simpson, Charman; King, Koboah (Bolaji 45), Harris, Marriott; Medlock (Hutchings 87), Archibald.
