Horsham 1-1 Maidstone Utd

Horsham produced one of their finest performances of the season in drawing 1-1 with second placed Maidstone Utd on Tuesday night.

Shaun Welford put the visiting Stones ahead when he swept home Tommy Osbourne’s low cross on 38 minutes but Ryan Marriott levelled a minute before half time with a thumping free kick.

Marriott had been brought down by Deren Ibrahim to win the free kick and the Horsham bench were incensed the Stones keeper was only shown a yellow card when he appeared to be the last man.

After an even first 45 minutes it was hosts Horsham - 14th in the Ryman South table - who showed greater attacking intent and created the clear openings.

Tom Gilbert nodded wide of goal when unmarked from Tony Nwachukwu’s cross and in a late flurry Scott Harris and Gilbert were denied by Ibrahim saves as Horsham settled for a point against the favourites for promotion.

In front of a lively midweek crowd of 275, Marriott was excellent in midfield, while Horsham’s defence were solid all night, led superbly by Matt Simpson in the absence of Gary Charman as goalkeeper Michael Hunter didn’t have a save to make in the second half.

In other Horsham news striker Billy Medlock has been released by the club. Full story and reaction in tomorrow’s West Sussex County Times.
