Holmes is where the heart is for Heath as injuries are fogotten

Broadbridge Heath put injuries and unavailabilities aside to beat Southwick 3-1 on Saturday.

A brace from red-hot striker Jake Holmes and a goal from Tim Martin gave Heath the three points in front of their home crowd.

Already without injured Martyn Flack and Liam Ahearne, manager Steve Painter then lost Dan Attwater and Andy Waddingham in the morning so a new pairing of Mark Cave and Stuart Chester took up their place in the centre of the Heath’s back four.

The visitors almost took the lead in the opening minutes when a mistimed back pass allowed Sam Blundell in but he shot wide.

Heath went ahead on 17 minutes when Ben Arthur won the ball in midfield and played an inch perfect through ball into the path of Tim Martin, who advanced on goal and found the bottom corner. Five minutes later it was 2-0, Jake Holmes cutting inside from the right to hit a left footed curler into the top corner, a super strike for his 13th goal of the season.

Early in the second half Heath keeper Ross Butterfill twice denied the visitors in quick succession and midway through the half Holmes beat the offside trap but saw his shot blocked by a deliberate handball. The defender was only cautioned but Holmes smashed home the resulting penalty to make it 3-0.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 75 minutes with a long range effort from Jay Tidey and could have scored a second with a shot that smashed against the post. Despite a nervy finish Heath were well worth the victory, and on the counter Jamal Sultan also struck a post late on.

Heath: Butterfill, Etherington, Swaine, Chester, Cave, Miller, Sultan, Arthur, Holmes (Burns 80), Martin (Pritchard 70), Wood.
