Horsham boss Simon Colbran has vehemently refused to blame either Michael Hunter or Ryan Woodford for Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Dulwich Hamlet.
The hosts’ first goal on 15 minutes went down as a Hunter own goal after the goalkeeper pushed a corner into his own net under pressure, and two minutes later he again struggled with a corner allowing Daniel Carr to score his first goal.
And Horsham finished the game with ten men when midfielder Woodford was shown a straight red for a strong challenge on Erhun Oztumer, before Carr went on to score another two to inflict a heaviest league defeat on Colbran’s side.
But in staunch defence of his usually rock solid goalkeeper, who has been one of Horsham’s best performers this season, Colbran said: “If you’re a central midfielder and you make a mistake you normally get away with it but if you’re a goalkeeper that doesn’t happen.
“Even Premiership keepers make mistakes and Michael’s been brilliant for us all season and what’s great is he’s such a big character that he’ll come back and be even more focussed on Tuesday night.
And with regards to Woodford he said: “It’s the same thing, he’s apologised, he knows he made a mistake because it wasn’t a great challenge.
“But when you get a player like him who is fully committed, and I know because I was the same, you don’t want to take that competitiveness out of him.
“I don’t encourage tackles like that but sometimes they happen, and like Michael he’s a big enough character to bounce back strongly.”
Colbran was disappointed with his side’s performance as the four game unbeaten league run came to an end, but lavished praise on his opponents.
He said: “I think it’ll be them and Maidstone competing for the title and they put in a top of the table performance which unfortunately we didn’t match.”
