Horsham YMCA came out of a hard-fought game with much-fancied Rye Utd as 2-0 winners to stretch their fantastic unbeaten run to ten matches.
Over a 90 minutes littered with chances at either end it was decided by small margins, hosts YM the more clinical with two first half goals from Scott Wason and Elliott Romain.
Home keeper Simon Lockwood made a fantastic double save while it was goalless, and then saved a second half penalty from Sam Adams as YM claimed all the points despite a number of players out of position because of injuries.
A delighted YM manager Peter Buckland said: “This does send out a message, it was our toughest game of the season I felt today.
“I’d love to have gone at them fully stacked, but sometimes changes have a strange way of working to your advantage because players stepping in have a point to prove.
“I thought Ash Dugdale at centre half was absolutely superb today and he’s a centre midfielder all day long.”
Wason’s opening goal was a cracker, the winger curling a shot from 25 yards into the far corner on 25 minutes, and Elliott Romain stabbed in a second at the back post when Rye failed to deal with a Dugdale long throw.
YM go to Division 1 leaders East Preston this Saturday at Buckland added: “Superb performance, I can’t wait to get at East Preston now and it gives me a week to get some of the injuries back.”
