HORSHAM lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with a well earned 2-2 away draw at Tooting & Mitcham Utd.
In fact they could consider themselves unlucky not to return with all three points as goals by Tony Nwachukwu and Tommy Youle pulled them back from going behind and kept them in the lead until Tooting’s Wade Small gained a late equaliser with three minutes to go.
Tooting took the lead in the 18th minute when Small pulled the ball back for Charlie Stimson to score a relatively simple goal from around six-yards.
Tooting nearly added another when Matt Drage headed a free-kick against the crossbar but then play turned to the other end as Horsham took the lead six minutes before half-time.
Tony Nwachukwu’s cross from the right found an in-form Tommy Youle who ended a great passing move in the box with a well-taken finish.
Both sides went close to scoring after the break as Horsham created several chances through Ray Freeman, Nwachukwu (twice), and a couple of dangerous headers by club captain Ryan Woodford, who came on as substitute for his first taste of action since suffering a prolapsed disc during their 4-3 away victory against Kingstonian on August 22.
New signing, Polish goalkeeper Thomasz Krol made a couple of good saves having made his debut when Ken Westoby fell ill in the run up to kick-off.
Finally Tooting grabbed a frustrating equaliser which denied Horsham two valuable away points.
A long throw-in found Small in the 87th minute who somehow managed to find the net through a crowded penalty area as Horsham were forced to be content with a draw.
