Youth cricket: Roffey maintain 100 per cent record

An in-form Roffey side took the spoils in the latest round of fixtures in the Identilam Colts Indoor League, with wins against West Chiltington and Capel.

West Chilt kicked the night off with a defeat to Capel, only Dan Abbott offered any resistance with 16 as they fell short of chasing their 94 target at Tanbridge House School in Horsham - figures of 3-7 from Tom Sanders led the way for Capel.

In the night’s second match, Max McAteer (30 not out) and Callum Jeal (21 not out) shrugged off the loss of Josh Dance as Roffey posted 91-3, with figures of 1-21 for Chilt’s Greg Baillie.

In reply, Abbott, 15, and Baillie gave Chilt a fighting chance with 28 off the first three overs, but Roffey’s bowlers took control as they could only manage 66-4.

Something had to give in the match of the night, as Roffey and Capel came into the game on the back of three straight wins.

And it began badly for Roffey, who lost McAteer and Jeal without a single run on the board.

But Dance came to the fore with an unbeaten 33, and ably supported by Sam Smith (16) and Pat Gibbs, helped Roffey post a useful 93-5.

Dom Venn proved to be the only Capel wicket to fall, and it was the miserly bowling of McAteer (1-17) from his three overs which was the key factor as Capel closed just five runs short, with Connor Eales and George Hebberd, both retiring on 21.
