It proved a good opening day of the new season for returning captain Guy Thorne and his Slinfold side with a commanding win over Hellingly.
The decision to bowl first by Thorne - back skippering the side this season - proved a good one as the visitors were all out for 96, a total Thorne and new overseas all-rounder Akeem Jordan easily chased down with 42 runs each.
Thorne, who opened and carried his bat for 42 from 54 balls, said: “I was delighted with our start to the season. It was a new team for us so didn’t quite know what to expect, but with that said our focus was to impose our own game on Hellingly, and my side’s attitude and commitment was first class.
“Pleasingly we were able to select from a strong squad of players for our opening game and our quality shone through from the start, and there was only ever one team in the game.
“Phil Awcock and Chris Stanbridge bowled a terrific spell through the middle overs and completely dried things up, and Phil was rewarded for his hard work with three wickets, with Chris taking one.”
“It was equally pleasing to see how well Akeem (newly recruited from Barbados as overseas player for the year) has settled into his debut season for the club. He continued his form (from a narrow loss to Horsham last week) with both bat and ball by taking four wickets and hitting a swift 42 from just 25 balls to help chase down our target.” Thorne was impressed with his bowlers and fielding display, adding: “We’ll be taking each game as it comes but we are in a positive mind set for the season ahead and looking forward to our next games.”
