Billingshurst CC have saluted the impact of new overseas player Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi.
In what was his maiden knock at the Woodworm, the Sri Lankan - who only arrived in the country three days before - made an unbeaten 153 as part of a brutal 223 third-wicket stand with Carleon Brome, who also chalked up his first century of the campaign as Billingshurst beat Wisborough Green by 117 runs in Division 3 West of the Sussex Cricket League.
Billingshurst had all but given up on luring an overseas player for the season after two failed attempts.
But having finally landed Mitpolaarachchi , 25, from Kandy in Sri Lanka, and seen him shine on Saturday, it was all worth the wait.
Hurst man Chris ‘Shaka’ Shambrook said: “It’s given us all the boost we needed. We had another Sri Lankan lined up but his Visa was refused, and a second didn’t get past immigration. But we got the opportunity for this lad to come over and it seems to be worth it. He flew in on Thursday, had a pint in the Kings Arms, one bit of net practice and a century on Saturday.”
Mitipolaarachchi was dropped while in single figures, but from there delivered a chancless and classy knock with everything along the deck.
Shaka added: “He complimented Carly (Brome), who also batted well for his first century.”
Next up Billingshurst host Bognor Regis while Wisborough Green entertain Pagham.
