Roffey rue lacklustre bowling display as they slip to sixth

It was a second consecutive loss for last year’s Sussex League Premier Division winners, which saw them fall to sixth in the standings.

After being put in, a magnificent 112 from Rohit Jagota – his maiden league century for the club – and Chris Webb’s 37 put Roffey in a strong position as they declared on 242-7 after 54.1 overs.

Nomads got away early on in their reply but once Stuart Faith fell for 38 to leave them 93-2 a mini collapse followed.

The home side lost three wickets for just 25 runs to leave them in real trouble at 118-5.

However, a superb unbeaten 116 from number three Aaron Phillips was the biggest factor in Nomads getting home, while Kashif Ibrahim (42) and Carl Simon’s unbeaten 24 from just 14 balls helped them to 244-6 as they claimed an unlikely win.

Skipper Davies admitted a lacklustre bowling display was the ultimate factor in defeat.

He said: “It was a game we shouldn’t have lost but a poor bowling display let us down.

“We were more than happy at the halfway stage with over 240 on the board.

“Last week it was our batting that let us down, now this week it was the bowling. It’s still early days but we need to bounce back.

“We need to try to string both our batting and bowling showings together and make sure we produce the goods in both departments on the same day.

“When we had them five down, I felt a couple more wickets would have seen us over the line. As it was, we know Nomads have a long batting line-up and their final two guys really punished us.

“We were throwing a bad ball an over in and they were getting away at the end.”

Defending champions Roffey will be looking to bounce back when they host place above Bexhill on Saturday.
