SOME of Horsham’s most talented young cricketers starred as the Sussex under-17 girls were crowned County Champions.
Georgia Adams and Horsham CC members Georgina Monk and Izi Noakes played their part as Sussex saw off Yorkshire in the semi final and then beat Kent in the final - erasing the painful memories of two defeats in the County Championship final.
Against Yorksghire, Georgia (25) and Izi (37) shared a stand of 53 in ten overs to help Sussex post 202-7.
And Yorkshire’s reply got off to a bad start as Izi (2-13) claimed a wicket with the first ball of the innings, and they continued to struggle against Georgina’s flighty spin which returned figures of 3-27 as they were dismissed for 136.
That set up a final against Kent the next day. And Izi’s tight bowling had Sussex on the front foot again as Kent posted 138.
In reply, Georgia and opening partner Chiara Green put on 53 off just 14 balls to put Sussex in a strong position, and thanks to an unbeaten 39 from Carla Rudd, they cruised to a famour victory.
Under 17 coach and director of cricket Charlotte Burton said: “I couldn’t be more happier for the girls, they have worked so hard over the last three years to be County Champions, I know how much it hurt them the two previous years to lose in the final, but they have come back fighting and deserve to win the Championship and also be unbeaten all season.”
