BILLINGSHURST captain Scott Stratton has expressed his dismay after he watched his side give away 76 extras in a 128 run loss to Slinfold.

Andy Wellfare was the only of the six bowlers Stratton used not to bowl a wide, as that part of the extras column tallied 46 in Slinfold's innings of 323/4.

Slinfold then bowled their visitors out for 195, as Billingshurst attempted to chase.

Stratton said: "We are only two games into the season, we are not going to lose the plot yet.
"But if you are conceding 76 extras, there is something wrong that needs looking at.

"I cannot say how angry I was. We have to recognise that we cannot just turn up in this league and expect to roll sides over."

The Scorer,

The Scorebox 12/05/2008 21:50:24
Mr Stratton is, of course right to be blasting his wide boys. Knowing Mr Stratton who is an excellent fellow, I am sure he also said something about the excellent batting, bowling and fielding performance put up by the young Slinfold team and the truly outstanding innings played by Jonathan Augustus. The truth is that many of the wides were a result of Mr Stratton's bowlers not knowing how to bowl at a player of such quality. It is also true to say that Billingsurst were rattling along at 8 an over at the start of their innings but were pegged back by accurate bowling by the likes of Ali Awcock, Tom Filby and Augustus himself but that if Mr Stratton's middle order batsmen had shown any sort of application they could have easily achieved a draw on a wonderfully benign batting pitch.

It is a shame that you have chosen not to report Mr Stratton's praise of the innnings played by Augustus and the excellent bowling and catching of the youthful and well led Slinfold team. Your report makes it sound as if the result of this game was down to Mr Stratton's wide boys - nothing could be wider of the mark!
