SOUTHWATER teenager Jess Hoole is celebrating selection for the Enlgand Under-21 bowls team.

The 15-year-old, who has played for Southwater Bowls Club for six years, has been called up to the national team after representing West Sussex for the last four years.

Jess admits the sport has the image of being an 'old person's game' – she is the only girl at Southwater while her mum, Kathy, is the third youngest at the age of 46 – and says it's not a sport most teenagers know a lot about.

"Not many people at school knew I played bowls until the head found out and then it was on plasma screens all around the school," said Millais student Jess.

"It's not so much embarrassing that my friends know I play but they don't really understand it and think it's just a load of old people knocking balls around.

"It does take a lot of practice but when you bowl well for your club or county it feels very good because you're part of a team."
