CLUB captain Trevor Loftus and ladies' champion Nikki Purton won Mannings Heath's mixed championship for the third year running on Bank Holiday Monday.

In testing conditions with both Kingfisher and Waterfall courses playing their full length after their August soaking, their 27 hole total of 124 put them six shots clear of their nearest challengers, Martin Kennell and Nikki's mum Elaine.

But there was a much closer finish in the nett competition where Ed and Sandra Roberts' return of 114 only pipped Ian Applegate and Rosemary Williams by a single stroke.

Fast improving David Williamson lowered his handicap another notch, from 13 to 12, with a fine round of 39 points over the Waterfall to win the club's Junior Open.

Only a point behind was ten year-old Gregor McIntosh, playing off 24, who showed no sign of being daunted by the medal tees to just beat Steven Gibbs of Sedlescombe to the runner-up spot on countback.
