HORSHAM'S rising high jump star Joe Kent believes he can follow in the footsteps of Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason having grabbed gold at the UK School Games.

The 16-year-old pupil at the College of Richard Collyer, clinched victory courtesy of clearing 2.02 metres at the first attempt edging out York and Humberside's Jamie Johnson who cleared the same height on his third attempt.

Kent suffered heartache at the four-day multi-sport event last year in Coventry, finishing fourth and missing out on a podium finish by the narrowest of margins.

But the Horsham Blue Star Harrier believes he was inspired to glory by Mason's Olympic heroics in Beijing and says he has enough in his locker to make his own Olympic bow in London in four years' time.

"Having come fourth last time around I was really determined to do a bit better this year and finish the season on a high," he said.

"I think last year, while I enjoyed the experience, I didn't really know what to expect and I was probably a bit overawed by the whole thing.

"But this year I knew what to expect and I was desperate to compete here having watched the Olympics just a week or two ago.
